ජාන | JEANS - A Symphonic Ceylon Dance Theatre

Under the artistic direction of Charith Welegedara, Live Academy presents GENES / ජාන — an emotionally charged, large-scale symphonic dance production that explores the fragile beauty of human love, romance, and relationships in an age of advancing technology.
This visionary work follows the intimate journey of a couple — from the spark of attraction and the tenderness of falling in love, to the sacred union of marriage, and eventually to the painful silence that grows when emotional connection begins to fade. As dissatisfaction creeps into their relationship, they turn toward a futuristic solution: humanoid robots designed to offer perfect companionship, flawless touch, and endless availability.
GENES / ජාන powerfully examines the struggle between human touch and synthetic connection, between real emotional intimacy and programmed perfection. Through breathtaking choreography, live orchestral music, and cutting-edge modern technology — including advanced projection mapping, evolving digital visuals, and humanoid robot characters — the production reveals the deep conflict within the human mind and heart. It questions what happens when we replace the imperfections, vulnerabilities, and true breath of human relationships with artificial companions that can never truly feel or love.
The project seamlessly fuses traditional Sri Lankan art forms with contemporary theatre, drawing from a rich vocabulary of Kandyan and Low Country dance elements, traditional drumming, Kolam patterns, Wannam and folk music, percussion, contemporary dance techniques, physical theatre, Chinese (QiXi / 气息) dance techniques, and futuristic visual storytelling through projection mapping. It captures the longing for genuine connection while confronting the seductive, yet emotionally hollow, world of technology and automation.
At the end of the 4-month workshop, Charith Welegedara will personally select 25 outstanding students to join the professional cast of GENES/ ජාන. The selected performers will have the extraordinary opportunity to present this major production at the International Theatre Festival in Bangkok, Thailand. They will perform alongside live music in a technologically innovative and emotionally compelling stage work, bringing this powerful creation to life on an international platform.
This is more than a dance workshop. It is a profound artistic journey into love, relationships, the human mind, and our uncertain future with technology.
